Retx.com Purchases Retail Customer Choice Technology
6/26/2000

ATLANTA, GA--Ross Malme, President and CEO of Retx.com, an e-business application provider to the deregulated energy market, announced today the purchase of exclusive rights to a technology process from Otter Tail Power Company designed to facilitate customer choice in the retail electric market. Otter Tail engineers who developed the technology under the direction of Ward Uggerud, COO, Energy Supply, will provide consulting services to Retx.com for the deployment of the technology.

Malme calls the purchase a logical fit for Retx.com. “We have an array of B2B products and services for the retail energy industry. One of our goals is to create a complete, integrated, efficient approach to deregulation,” he says, “and Otter Tail’s unique process adds to our tool chest of reliable offerings.”

John MacFarlane, president and CEO of Otter Tail Power Company, an investor-owned electric utility based in Fergus Falls, MN says the technology offers retail electric customers the flexibility of choice that only wholesale electric customers enjoy today. “This technology provides customer switching, scheduling, and imbalance accounting in a deregulated electric utility industry. In addition, it provides enhanced demand-side participation, allowing consumers to change their energy consumption in response to market prices. The volatility in the price of electricity during the past two years and the concern about reliability of the electrical network emphasize the value of this demand-side product.”

“We began work on this technology some time ago,” said Uggerud, “when it became obvious that a truly competitive retail electricity market cannot exist until retail customers have full, robust choice-including the option of multiple, simultaneous suppliers. This technology facilitates that while allowing interconnected operations to occur reliably and seamlessly and promoting demand-side participation, consumer-owned generation, and the use of renewable resources.”
